When we talk about cut, we really are referring to the shape of the gems and how well they are actually cut and faceted. Preusser Jewelers discusses classic diamond ring shapes to give you an idea of what we have in store.
Round
The round brilliant cut is the most popular diamond ring shape. It is a timeless shape that mesmerizes with its brilliant sparkle and refraction when cut beautifully.
Cushion
Cushion cuts have been around for nearly two centuries. They can be symmetrical, or elongated. They are, cushion, or cushion brilliant, or cushion modified brilliant. Each one has slightly different facet arrangement.
Emerald
Emerald-cut diamonds started in 1902 when the Asscher Brothers of Holland cut diamonds in a similar fashion to emeralds. The larger rectangular table brings out the color and facets of the diamond. When you pick this shape, you might have to go with a higher clarity grade, as they are easier to see into.
Marquise
Marquise diamond ring shapes date back to the 1740s. That’s when, according to legend, Louis XV of France designed a diamond ring to give to his mistress, Marquise de Pompadour. Shaped similar to a football, marquise cuts were big in the 80’s and 90’s and are making a comeback! Because of the elongation of the shape they look larger than a round diamond of the same carat weight.
