When selecting diamonds or other gems, it is important to understand the 4Cs. These standards were developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to create a universal way to communicate the quality of a stone.

1) Cut

The cut has one of the greatest impacts on a gem’s beauty, because a poorly cut gem will not refract light well. An excellent cut will really help a gem shine.

2) Color

The GIA’s color-grading scale begins with the letter D for colorless diamonds, and continues with increasing presence of color to the letter Z.

3) Clarity

Clarity is based on the size, location, nature, number, and color of the inclusions and blemishes.

4) Carat

Carat is the standard measurement of a diamond or a gemstone’s weight.
